The 311 earthquake and the ensuing Fukushima nuclear crisis sent a shockwave to Japan and the world, and produced immediate consequences on lives and politics, both domestic and international. 311 compels Japanese intellectuals to re-think thoughts and interrogate the relations/distance between contemporary theories and activism. Recently Taiwan is also embroiled in intense debates about nuclear energy in the wake of the 311 disaster. In this roundtable forum, two distinguished speakers Professor Kokubun and Professor Chiba will join local scholars for a discussion on the status of life, technology, and critical theories after 311. Through the Asian Frontiers Forum, we hope to create deep dialogues among Asian intellectual communities on these urgent issues and foster reflexive and transformative deployments of critical theories in East Asia.

Kokubun Koichiro, Associate Professor at Takasaki City University of Economics, Japan, specializes in contemporary French theories (Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze), 17th-century European philosophy, and Japanese thoughts. His recent publications include Nature in Philosophy (『哲学の自然』, 2013, co-authored with Nakazawa Shinichi), Spinoza’s Method (『スピノザの方法』, Misuzu-Shobo, 2011), and Ethics of Leisure and Boredom (『暇と退屈の倫理学』, Asahi-Press, 2011), the last of which received 2012 Kinokuniya Book of the Year Award in the Humanities category. Chiba Masaya is Associate Professor in the Graduate Program of Core Ethics and Frontier Sciences at Ritsumeikan University, Japan. His intellectual concerns mainly focus on models of “after-poststructuralism” and Deleuze’s composition of metaphysics and natural philosophy. His papers and columns can be found in the following prominent journals: Gendai-Shisō (現代思想), Furansu Tetsugaku Shisō Kenkyū (Revue de Philosophie Française), and Shisouchizu beta (思想地圖 Beta, edited by Azuma Hiroki). Professor Kokubun is also the Japanese translator of Claire Colebrook’s Gilles Deleuze, Derrida’s Marx and Sons, and Deleuze’s Kant’s Critical Philosophy. He and Professor Chiba are co-translators of Guattari’s The Anti-Oedipus Papers (2010).
